Marine Conservation

Within PSAC there is a strong interest in marine life, and particularly the marine life of UK waters.

There is an assumption that diving around the coast of Britain is cold, dark and muddy, and that you have to fly off to tropical waters to see exotic marine life.

In fact the UK coastal waters are rich with marine life of all shapes, forms and colours. Our plankton rich temperate seas support a greater diversity of life than most tropical waters.

Our extensive and highly varied coastline, warmed by the gulf-stream, creates a great variety of food rich ecosystems to be explored by anyone with an interest in natural history.

Club trips take in sites from storm battered headlands to quiet sheltered bays, from shallow sunlit forests of kelp to deep dark submarine cliffs. All of these and more have their own unique groups of marine life, and their own unique geological history.

Within the club there are a number of marine life photographers, and a lot of members have BSAC marine life identification qualifications. As well as organizing diving trips specifically to look at marine plants and animals, we have occasional slide talks presented by members or visitors.

In PSAC we know that we must protect the quality of our coastal waters and the environment in which we enjoy our sport. We are one of the few clubs that has a dedicated Marine Conservation Officer. The club has had strong links with the local Marine Conservation Society for many years, sometimes enjoying joint activities, and also supporting the MCS on Beach Litter Surveys, and Underwater Surveys
